Nelson's death at Trafalgar. 1869 illustration depicting the death of the British naval commander Horatio Nelson (centre-right) onboard HMS Victory during the Battle of Trafalgar, in 1805. Nelson rose through the ranks of the Royal Navy, being appointed to his own command by 1778. In 1797, his injured right arm was partially amputated. The following year he won a famous victory over the French at the Battle of the Nile (1798), being raised to the peerage as baron and later viscount. At the time of his death he was a vice-admiral, Commander-in-Chief of the Mediterranean Fleet at the Battle of Trafalgar, part of the Napoleonic Wars. He was buried at St Paul's Cathedral with a state funeral.
