Labelled illustration of the Mars landing sequence of the European Space Agency's Schiaparelli ExoMars Demonstrator Module (EDM). Launched in March 2016, Schiaparelli will enter the Martian atmosphere on 19 October 2016, heat shields will protect it as it slows to around 1700 kilometres per hour. A parachute will be deployed along with a radar system. After jettisoning the heat shields and parachute, a thruster will further slow the lander, with a crushable structure protecting it when the engines cut out 2 metres above the surface of Meridiani Planum. The entire sequence shown here will take less than six minutes.
