Bladder cancer. Artwork of a section through the male urogenital system showing an infiltrating tumour (white, upper right) in the muscular wall of the bladder (red, upper centre). Bladder cancer (urothelial cancer) is a fairly common type of cancer. Symptoms may include passing blood in the urine and a feeling of increased bladder pressure. Depending on the site and invasiveness of the cancer it may be surgically removed or destroyed with heat. If the cancer is widespread, as here, radiotherapy or even removal of the bladder (cystectomy) may be necessary. The prognosis is poor at this level of muscle penetration and the cancer may already have spread to other organs.
