The street railwaypower plant engineer has decided in favor of the panelboard, which is in reality a number of independent boards, each one containing all the apparatus necessary to con-trol a generator or a feeder, as the case may be. Theaccompanying engraving shows the latest designs of theengineers of the General Electric Company in the way between generator lead and ground, and the small airgap is a much weaker di-electric than the insulation offield and armature. The magnet is connected betweenthe generator and line, and the induction of its windingsaffords additional protection to the generators againstlightning. The field rheostat for controlling the poten-tial due to the shunt field is placed at the back of thepanels, and is of the Carpenter enamel type. It is oper-ated by. a hand wheel on the front of the panels. A dis-charge resistance of 500 ohms is attached to the fieldrheostat to cushion the discharge when the field switch is * ■■. Two sizes of generator panelare shown at the left, and three feeder panels at the panels of 1,000 amperes and less the Thomson-Houston type of ammeter is used. It has a dampingarrangement, which renders the needle almost dead larger panels, the Weston illuminated dial ammetertakes its place. The main switches are single pole quickbreak, the positive and negative being mounted on thepanel. The equalizing switch is put on a pedestal nearthe generator, according to the plan explained in ourssue of August, 1894. The lightning arrester is typeI R, and consists of an iron clad electro-magnet, in thefield of which are two carbon points, separated by a one-thirty-second-inch air gap. The points are connected opened. It is connected in series with a pilot lamp onthe front of the panel. The field switch for the shuntfield of the generator is of the regular three point type, and is set to t
