Such afleet would prevent the South from invading theXorth, and would assist the army of the !Nortli in in-vading the South. It would also keep the Southernrivers open to a great extent, so that the South couldnot get sup})lies for its army from the western sideof the Mississippi River. Those river war ships hadto be of a kind never seen before. They had to beshallow and flat, so as to move on the rivers when theAvaters were low. They had to carry guns as large asthe guns that ocean-going war ships carried. Theyhad to be protected with a. crude kind of armor, be-cause the fighting they had to do was to be at shortrange. For these reasons the river war ships were curious-looking things. They were generally rectangular inshape,
