Nanzen-ji Temple (Nanzenji), Kyoto, Japan


The exterior grounds and gardens of Nanzen-ji (Nanzenji) or Zuiryusan Nanzen-ji, formerly Zenrin-ji is a Zen Buddhist temple in Kyoto, Japan. Emperor Kameyama established the temple in 1291 on the site of his previous detached palace. Nanzen-ji is one of the Five Great Zen Temples of Kyoto. It is also the headquarters of the Nanzen-ji branch of Rinzai Zen and part of the popular Philosophers Walk through some of Kyoto's most well known sights.
