Wakuya Castle standing tall illuminated at night during cherry blossom season
Watari Shigemune, a military commander, became of the governor of Wakuya Castle in 1591 and for the next 277 years, the castle remained under the control of the Sendai Clan. It was completely destroyed in a fire in 1689, and rebuilt. With the shift in power to the Meiji Government in the 19th century, many castles were dismantled, including Wakuya Castle, leaving only its stone walls and the taikodo turret. Come spring, the place with come alive with the blossoming of over a 1000 cherry blossom trees on the castle grounds and the road leading to it. The locals will organise cherry blossom viewing festivals coupled with food and drink stalls and stage performances.
