THE UNITED STATES ARMORY. The establishment of a national armory or gun works atSpringfield had its inception in an act of congress passed in 1776,by which the suggestion was made that Massachusetts constructan armory at Brookfield for manufacture of arms, cartridges andother munitions of war. It had been the first intention of Gen-eral AVashington to found the works at Hartford, but on the rep-resentation of Col. David Mason to General Knox that Spring-field was a more suitable location, the act finally designated thattown as the site of the establishment. Colonel Mason had servedas an artillery officer in the last French and English war, and he,under the committee of safety of JNIassachusetts, collected atSalem the cannon and military stores which the British in 1775sought to capture.
