Theâtre de l'Opera,1896 Carnival,on the Saturday before Lent,Feb. 15,Gala Fancy-Dress Ball. Features a profiled woman in a billowing dress looking out over her shoulder as a shadowy male figure and other revelers dance around her. Jules Chéret (May 31,1836 - September 23,1932) was a French painter and lithographer who became a master of Belle Époque poster art. He has been called the father of the modern poster. The Theâtre de l'Opera is a 1,979-seat opera house,built between 1861-75 for the Paris Opera,but soon became known as the Palais Garnier,in recognition of its opulence and its architect,Charles Garnier.
