Material handling cyclopedia; a reference book covering definitions, descriptions, illustrations and methods of use of material handling machines employed in industry . he greatest conservation of space at the 390 CONVEYORS AND ELEVATORS FOR PACKED MATERIAL floor. Similarly, where a basement is used for storage, casesof empty bottles are handled from the cars to storage witha minimum of labor, attention, and damage to the handling smooth-bottom cases on a spiral of 4 radius a drop per round of 36 in. is satisfactory, al-though most smooth cases weighing 50 lb. or more willtravel successfully on a drop per round of 30 in. Runwaywidths of from 18 in. to 24 in. are usual, with averagecenter to center of rollers of 4 in. to S in. Eight sets of2j4 in. by 2]/^ in. by % in. upright angle posts form a goodsupporting system. These should be braced by the crosssaddles under the curves and by outside horizontal rings,or by the side guards, riveted to the uprights. ? Chemicals and Drugs Barrels—Kegs—Drums—Cases—Carboys Where it is desirable to lower barrels, drums, or similarcontainers on end, as well as to provide temporary storage. Spiral Provides Temporary Storage on the conveyor, the roller spiral has little competition jneconomy of operation. Similarly, in handling carboys, casesof bottles, or other packages adapted to gravity rollers, the roller spiral forms a very flexible link in systems ofgravity conveyors. Wholesale and manufacturing drug houses use this spiral for the handling of loose bottles inboxes, particularly from filling tables to labeling machinesand packers—the boxes moving slowly and in practically acontinuous stream between the various operations. For handling ordinary barrels on a spiral of 4 ft. outsideradius, a drop per round of 30 in. to 36 in. is usual, de-pending partly on the height between runway rounds nec-essary to clear the barrel in an upright position. For therougher barrels, however, a drop as great as 40 in.
