A field of semi-leafless peas, Pisum sativum. Semi-leafless pea varieties have been developed by plant breeders, because they are less likely to be knocked over by wind and rain. The standard pea leaf normally consists of a number of leaflets with a tendril at the tip and leaf-like blades (bracts) attached directly to the stem at the base of each leaf stalk. The semi-leafless varieties have only tendrils and bracts. The more open growth habit of the semi- leafless varieties also helps to avoid mildew infections, which are encouraged by dampness and by stagnant air movement around the plants.
