A photograph of a petechial rash on the right eyelid of a person infected with the bacterium Neisseria menigitidis, causing meningococcal meningitis. Meningitis is inflammation of the membranes of the brain or spinal cord. Clinical manifestations include fever, nuchal rigidity, seizures, severe headache, petechial rash (seen here), stupor and focal neurologic deficits. The petechial rash is caused by tiny localised haemorrhages that represent escape of blood from the vessels into the surrounding skin.
