Skin section. Light micrograph of a section through the dermis of the human scalp. The dermis, which lies below the epidermis, contains hair follicles (dark circles with pink centres), sweat glands (small dark circles with white centres), blood vessels and nerves. Associated with the hair follicles are arrector pili muscles (solid black lines), which allow the hairs to stand on end, and sebaceous glands (purple). Sebaceous glands produce an oily substance called sebum. Sebum is secreted into the hair follicles and lubricates and protects the hair and skin. Magnification unknown.
