Darling has recently described an organism resembling thatof kala-azar found in a fatal disease of tropical America. Thoughthe organism, he savs, resembles H. Donovani, he thinks it has enoughpoints of difference to be placed in a different genus; therefore hegives it the name Histoplasma capsulatnni, and calls the disease his-toplasmosis. He says it differs from H. Donovani in the form andarrangement of its chromatin nucleus and in not possessing a chro- FLAGELLATA. 555 matin rod. It has a refractile achromatic capsule. Morphology.—The bodies are circular to elliptical in shape, from2,u to 4/i in diameter, and contain a double nucleus, a large oval oneat one part of the periphery and a small circular or rod-shaped onenear or at the opposite part of the periphery. This smaller bodystains more intensely than the larger one, while the cytoplasm of theparasite stains very dimly, sometimes showing only a faint periph-eral rim. Any nuclear and cytoplasmic staining methods will bringout these points in Zenker-fixed material. Smears stain
