The Queensboro Bridge, also known as the 59th Street Bridge is a cantilever bridge over the East River in New York City that was built in 1909. The bridge connects the neighborhoods of Long Island City in the borough of Queens with Manhattan , passing over Roosevelt Island. Passes over the bridge in New York State Route 25 and above to routes NY 24 and NY 25A. The Bridge Queensboro Bridge is the westernmost of the East River and carries a number of state route, the NY 25 and ends at the west end (Manhattan ) bridge . A bridge is often knock as the " 59th Street Bridge " because its Manhattan end is located between 59th Street and Street several serious proposals to connect Manhattan with Long Island City but began to be realized until 1838 but attempts to finance the bridge were made by a private company from 1867 . Despite efforts never materialized and the company they went bankrupt in the 1890s . Plans began to be realized until 1903 under the new department of bridges in the city , led by Gustav Lindenthal in collaboration with Leffert L. Buck and Henry Hornbostel , designers of the Williamsburg Bridge. The bridge construction did not begin until 1909 due to delays caused a collapse during a storm and labor unrest ( including an attempt to blow up the bridge with dynamite ) . The bridge opened on March 30, 1909 , costing about $ 18 million and 50 lives. The bridge was known as the Blackwell Island Bridge , to the Roosevelt Island Bridge . Between 1930 and 1955 , there was a vehicular elevator to transport cars to and from Welfare Island , now known as Roosevelt Island. This was demolished in 1970.
