Frankfurt am Main is the largest city in the German state of Hesse, After the Austro-Prussian War in 1866 Prussia annexed several smaller states, among them the Free City of Frankfurt. Although Frankfurt had stayed neutral in the war, but its free press bothered the Prussians and they used the opportunity to occupy the city by force:
