E. coli STEC bacterial test. Results of a test for the O111 serogroup of the Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) bacteria. The sample on the left tested positive. The sample on the right tested negative. The red clumps that formed in the sample on the left indicate that the O111 bacteria have bound with the O111 antibody-coated latex beads on the test card. The toxin produced by these E. coli strains is known as shiga-like toxin (verotoxin). It acts on the lining of blood vessels, causing bloody diarrhoea and potentially fatal kidney failure.
