Threave Castle on the River Dee near Castle Douglas, Dumfries and galloway, Scotland. The castle stands on an island and is only accessible by a small boat ride. It was built in the 1370s by Archibald the Grim and was a stronghold of the "Black Douglases", Earls of Douglas and Lords of Galloway. The keep and artillary house remain standing. After a seige during in the Bishop's War The Covenanters ordered the buildings to be dismantled, and the materials to be disposed for use by the public.
