. An illustrated and descriptive guide to the great railways of England and their connections with the Continent . of fan tracing springing from slender columns, and is said to beunique in England. It is situate on the Red Mount. 54 :>t5- Cathedrals and Places of Note. CAMBRIDGE. From the heights of Ely Cathedral ma)- be seen the wide-reaching collegesof Cambridge, which is probably the oldest educational centre in the king-dom. The whole of the seventeen colleges which form the University havegrown up one by one; here under the care of a Bishop, there under theguardianship of King or Queen, and in other cases through the munificenceof private influence; yet amid the many modifications which have arisenduring the seven centuries of its existence, it has continuously evolved ahigher and nobler conception of education. Among the places of interest, those which have the most claim upon theattention of those whose time is limited are St. Peters, Queens, Kings,Clare, Trinity, St. Johns, and Magdalen Colleges. To these may be addedthe Fitzwilliam Museum, the Senate House, and the University SENATE HOUSE AND GREAT ST. MARTS CHURCH. Nor should we omit Kings College Chapel, a structure of greatbeauty. The interior is very impressive, and the building as a whole maybe considered architecturally one of the principal objects of interest inCambridge. In connection with Kings College Chapel, it is well to remem-ber that a fair view of the colleges and town can be obtained by ascendingthe staircase at the north-west corner. The various colleges have each somespecial point of attraction ; thus, one is noted for its associations with greatmen, another for its library, and a third from its connection with medicineor law; but Trinity College may be taken as typically representativeof the University. It is the largest and one of the noblest foundations inthe kingdom : the old court is said to be the most sjiacious (luadrangle inthe world. Trinity is famous, not only for it
