Tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum) on the bush in summer. Three fruits in three different stages of ripeness next to each other: red and ripe, semi-ripe

The area of origin of the tomato is Central and South America, with wild forms distributed and native from northern Chile to Venezuela. The original domestication of the tomato is not clearly understood: the Peruvian hypothesis and the Mexican hypothesis exist. The greatest diversity of forms in cultivation is found in Central America. There, tomatoes were cultivated by the Maya and other peoples from about 200 BC to 700 AD as Xītomatl or tomatl for short. Seeds were found during excavations south of Mexico City in caves in the Tehuacán Valley.
