USPS mail carriers walk through CaVaLa Park in the New York neighborhood of Tribeca on Wednesday August 5 2009 while performing their appointed rounds The recently opened park formerly a parking lot features grassy areas and a waterfall and canal hearkening back to the colonial period when Canal Street really was a canal albeit a fetid one The water feature was designed by artist Elyn Zimmerman and named Canal Waterworks The park is located at the intersection of Canal Varick and Laight streets hence it s name Richard B Levine
