The Tympan, or metal bed upon which the paper to beprinted is placed, should be padded well with paper tomake a firm impression, the number of sheets requireddepending upon the character of the form. Thesesheets are held in place by means of the iron clampswhich slip over the ends of the tympan (see Fig. 160). The first print struck off probably will be imperfect,that is, some portions will be lighter than others, dueto uneven impression. This is overcome by what isknown as Overlaying the form.
