Surface of Io (second of 2 images). Galileo space- craft image of the area around the Pillan Patera volcano (at upper right) on Io, a moon of Jupiter. Other visible volcanoes include Io's largest, Pele (centre), & Babbar Patera (lower left). Dark areas are volcanic hot spots. The 400-kilometre wide dar area around Pillan Patera is the result of a recent eruption. Red, orange & yellow areas are covered in various forms and compounds of sulphur. White areas are probably sulphur dioxide frost. Image taken at a range of 506,500 kilometres (km) on 19 September 1997. The smallest visible objects are 2km across. (See also R380/086 for this area before the eruption).
