The tympanum contains a representation, also in niello, ofthe Eternal Father with arms extended and surrounded by angels. Thedado is filled with a light arabesque ornament; and on the entablature isthe legend Gloria in excelsis Deo, et in terra pax. The size is eightinches in height by about five across. The pax is used at high mass in the catholic Church: very frequentnotices of it are to be found in mediaeval inventories, and in servicebooks of the Church of England before the reign of Edward the examples in metal and in ivory are preserved in the museum.
