That was more than a hundred years ago. Now the Eng-Ush and the Americans have become good friends, and theEngUsh people see that the Revolution ended in the waythat was best for both of President Washingtons Coach. When it was clear that there would be no more fighting,Washington went back to Mount Vernon. He hoped tospend the rest of his life there. But the country neededhim, and a few years later it chose him the first Presidentof the United States. Washington was made President in New York City,which was the capital of theUnited States at that time. AFrench gentleman who was theretells us how Washington, stand-ing in the presence of thousandsof people, placed his hand onthe Bible, and solemnly sworethat with the help of God hewould protect and defend theUnited States of America. Washington was elected Presi-dent twice. When he died manyof the people in England and France joined America inmourning for him; for all men honored his memory.
