Hay- AFFARATUS FOB TESTING CYLINDER OILS. In the course of a paper on Special Experimentswith Lubricants, presented by J. E. Denton beforelift Richmond meeting of the American Society ofMechanical Engineers an apparatus for testing cyl-inder oils is described as follows: Referring to Fig. 1, a piston X of a 0 in. steam cylinder,9 in. stroke, is fitted with a special pa<-king ring C carriedupon spring leven force of friction created be-. JVLINDEU OIL TKSTKK- THE RAIL^^^AY MASTER MECHANIC. Iween it and the walls of the cylinder shall move a pencilarm E, and, as the piston reciprocates, form an approxi-mately rectangrular diagram on a piece of paper A heldagainst the pencil. Oue-half the width of the rectangulardiagram measures the total frictional resistance of the ringon a scale of 230 lbs. to the inch. The packing ring C ismade almost flexible saw slits on its in-terior surface, and can be expanded by levers actuatedby the screw F, so that desired of pressureup to 150 lbs. per square inch can be created between thering and the surface of the cylinder. Two ordinary pack-ing rings S prevent the steam pressure from entering thespace devoted to the special ring, so that by connectingthis space with the atmosphere the only pressure upon thepacking ring will be that due to the adjustment of thescrew F. Provision is made, however, to create a pressureunder the test
