His parents, William andElizabeth (!. l-ryling, came from Holland in IStil, and sincethen have been residents of Newark. 522 THE PASSAIC VALLEY He was educated in the Newark public schools, and after-ward read law for four years in the office of Francis While studying law, and before his admissionto the bar, he laid a substantial foundation for legal prac-tice through his con-nection with and asmanager of the Mer-cantile Company, a col-lection and commercialagency in Newark. Hewas admitted to th?-New Jersey bar as anattorney in February,1897, a few days afterreaching the twenty-first anniversary of hisbirth, and in February,1900, three years later,became a first his practice wasmostly commercial law,but he has graduallybranched out until nowhis clientage is of a gen-eral character, embrac-ing more particularly divorce, chancery, and corporationlaw.
