Driftwood Boat, pirate ship 'Grace Darling' Hoylake's shore art, marine weathered timbers on the beach Hoylake, Wirral UK Weather. Storm skies over the Driftwood Boat, a children's art project. The 'Grace Darling' is a sculpture on Hoylake’s shore pirate ship named after Grace Darling who aged 22 rowed out in a storm with her father to help survivors of the SS Forfarshire, wrecked off the Farne Islands in 1838. Since she was “berthed” on the rocks by the new Hoylake Lifeboat station in Summer 2013, hundreds of children (and grown-ups) have clambered on the driftwood ship.

Made from driftwood, and branches and fallen trees from the nearby Arrow Park, the artwork is named after Grace Darling who aged 22 rowed out in a storm with her father to help survivors of the SS Forfarshire, wrecked off the Farne Islands. Her role in the rescue, on 7 September 1838, was picked up by the press, and she became a national celebrity.
