Vintage photo of French boxer and war hero Georges Carpentier (1894 - 1975) - arguably the greatest European fighter of all time. Carpentier, nicknamed "The Orchid Man", won a string of titles in various weight divisions during a career lasting from 1908 to 1926 and during World War One flew dangerous low-level missions as an observation pilot for the French Air Force and was awarded the Croix de Guerre and the Medaille Militaire.

Carpentier, nicknamed "The Orchid Man", won a string of titles in various weight divisions during a career lasting from 1908 to 1926. He became welterweight champion of both France and Europe in 1911, middleweight champion of Europe in 1912 and both light heavyweight and heavyweight champion of Europe in 1913. During World War One Carpentier flew dangerous low-level missions as an observation pilot for the French Air Force and was awarded the Croix de Guerre and the Medaille Militaire. In 1920 he won the Light Heavyweight Championship of the World when he defeated Battling Levinsky but in 1921 he failed to capture the world heavyweight title when he was knocked out by Jack Dempsey. After retiring Carpentier acted in movies and ran an upmarket bar in Paris. Photo circa 1914.
