An iPhone showing a self isolation message during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2021, with a negative Covid test and booklet.
During what came to be known as the 'Pingdemic' during 2021, tens of thousands of people were 'pinged' by the NHS app on their smartphone, having come into close contact with someone who tested positive for Covid-19. They were instructed to self isolate to try and reduce the spread of the disease. The app's sensitivity was reduced in August 2021 to reduce the numbers of those having to self isolate and help out businesses whose staff were having to stay off work in large numbers.
