It was further also determinedthat Mr. Holman superintend the building of thesteeple on the Lutheran Church, employ workmen,select the materials, for which he is to receive fiftydollars as a compensation for services. The building thus remodeled was the place of wor-ship of the congregation until Oct. 21,1838, when the. entire edifice and the adjoining school-house (erectedin 1822) were entirely destroyed by fire. On the fol-lowing day, in compliance with a request from thevestry and the pastor, Rev. Samuel Sprecher, the. SECOND CHURCH. came first stationed pastor. The following are thefounders of this church, who in 1795 signed thearticles of church government: Benjamin Kurtz,Henry Saylor, George Pfeiffer, Matthias Hutman,George Jauss, George Hartman, Frederick Youse,Johannes Ebert, John Shoch, George Ziegler, MartinKrieger, George Seidel, George Scheile, George Em-erich, Peter Walter, Caspar Shmidt, Stephen Horn-ing, George Buks, Balthazer Sees, John Fager, PeterBricker, Christoff Sess, John Mytinger, BernhardGeiger, Peter Brua. The original building of 1814 continued in use un-altered until 1829, when the following record showssteps were taken to erect a steeple : congregation assembled at the ruins and determinedto rebuild the church.
