The long lasting qualities of this class of lumber is now well known, and the increasing quantity of it now being used for benches and other places where rot sets in quickly shows that florists and the building trade have a good opinion of it. Adam Schillo, of the Adam Schillo Lumber Co., cor. of Weed and Hawthorn streets, gave a few interesting particulars respecting it recently. Not only is the pecky cypress more lasting than the ordinary pine, but it is known to last out three or four lots of the ordinary cypress. Added to this it is considerably cheaper, though the price is rising, and already is consider- ably higher than it was five years ago. This is in a great measure due to the large amount of the 6-inch size used now in florists' benches. The pecky cypress is a southern tree that grows naturally in swampy posi- tions, and when first cut it weighs very heavily, being so very wet. This renders stacking for several months neces- sary, in order to reduce the freight charges as much as possible, while of course the seasoning given is an ad- vantage. But to ensure delivery on time it is absolutely necessary to give orders well in advance of requirements. Mr. Schillo says he has orders in hand now for over 600,000 feet of this lumber, and most of these are not to be shipped un- til May or June. The amount used in fact is quite 25 per cent more than was used two or three years ago, and is con- stantly increasing. The Adam Schillo Co. finds business very satisfactory; the firm has been very busy, in fact, all LUMBER for Greenhouse Benckei!^ Ship Lap, Drop Sidino, Sheathing, Flooring, White Cedar Posts, Etc
