The Great Synagogue, Mazkeret Batya, Israel
Mazkeret Batya's Great Synagogue on 1 Eliyahu Boulevard, designed by architect Pinhas Nit, is one of the most beautiful temples in Israel. It was built almost 100 years ago. Gift of the Rothschild family, it was inaugurated in 1928 . The building has a beautiful entrance with a large arch welcoming its visitors. It is an interesting building with beauty marking the end of the 19th century. It has an atmosphere of the past and a lot of simplicity. The place is reminiscent of synagogues in Europe, with towers on the sides – almost as if it was brought in from Poland, but with a local flavor. Its compactness resembles the spirit of the rural houses of the baron's colony. At the end of the British mandate over Palestine , during clashes with the British, the Haganah hide weapons under the Bimah (the altar). During the War of Independence of Israel , the synagogue was transformed into a field hospital where the wounded treated in particular the Battle of Latrun (1948). The synagogue has played an important role in social and ritual life of the moshav. Currently, it is only open to prayer times and not completely filled during major festivals of Tishri . From the beginning, given the origin of most of the inhabitants of the city, the offices are celebrated according to the rite Ashkenazi . The synagogue has been classified by the architect Gudovich Israel, former planner for the city of Tel Aviv as one of the ten most beautiful synagogues in Israel.
