View of Piel Island from Roa Island

Roa Island was joined to the mainland in 1846 by a causeway which carried a railway line. Until 1891 steamships sailed from the island to Fleetwood. The railway was closed in 1936. Today the place is home to a variety of boats, some seaworthy, others gently rotting away. The whole area is redolent of past glories.
