The Fijians are even more devoted tocannibalism than the New Zealanders, andtheir records are still more appalling. ANew Zealander has sometimes the grace tofeel ashamed of mentioning the subject inthe hearing of an European, whereas it isimpossible to make a Fijian really feel thatin eating human flesh he has committed anunworthy act. He sees, indeed, that thewhite men exhibit great disgust at canni-balism, but in his heart he despises them forwasting such luxurious food as human flesh. Even the Christianized natives have tobe watched carefully lest they should betempted by old habits, and revert to the cus-tom which they had promised to example, Thakombau, the King of Mbau,became a Christian, or at least pretended to.
