When, later on, the Club removed fromHanover Square to Dover Street, one of these mantelpieces was boughtby a generous member and transferred to the new house, where it isstill much admired. Another of them adorns a mansion in Square was built about 1718, and named in honour ofGeorge—the first King of the Hanoverian dynasty—who had recentlycome to the throne. It at once became fashionable. The houses wereof handsome and substantial exterior, and the interior decorations werecarried out in an elaborate manner. The first settlers were people of. Theysoon began to agitate for the removal of the gallows from Tyburn tosomewhere near Kingsland, as the rabble which attended thefrequent executions came betwixt the wind and their nobility. Strypereports a rumour that the common place of execution at Tyburnshall be appointed elsewhere for the removing any inconvenience andannoyance that might thereby be occasioned to Hanover Square orthe houses thereabouts. The agitation, though strongly supported,was unsuccessful.
