Centrifuging a blood sample. Blood sample being placed in a centrifuge during testing in a laboratory. The centrifuge spins the sample at high speed to physically separate out various components. Blood is analysed for levels of components such as cholesterol and glucose, for pathogens like bacteria and viruses, and to determine a person's blood group. Blood tests can be haematological, biochemical or microbiological. Haematological tests analyse the components of the blood. Biochemical tests identify chemicals in the blood. Microbiological tests are for microbes such as bacteria, viruses and fungi.
