Head of a Buddhist Guardian; 13th century, Japan, Kamakura Period, Cypress wood, brass, glass. This is the head of one of the Shitennō, a Buddhist guardian king of one of the four cardinal directions. During the Kamakura period (1185-1333) when this sculpture was made, buddhist sculpture reached its most expressive point in Japan. Sculptures like this would protect the temple from enemies of the religion.
