The retina may be affected secondarily to the choroid as has already been described, or the spirochaeta pallida may be primarily deposited in it. As in all metastatic lesions of the retina, this is more likely to take place in the neigh- bourhood of the disc where it is most vascular. The papilla also is usually involved, producing a condition of neuro- reti- nitis. The swelling and pressure of the exudation in the papilla, accompanied by inflammation in the vessel walls, will sometimes cause secondary thrombosis of a retinal vein.
