All day long on April 11, 1918, the Germans were hurlinggreat masses of troops against the British lines on the northernfront, from La Bassee to the Ypres-Commines Canal southeastof Ypres. As the result of these heavy assaults Haigs troopswere forced back north of Estaires and Steenwerck. Theevacuation of Armentieres followed. The German advance onthe previous day between Warneton and the Lys on the north andtheir drive to the south of Armentieres had subjected tneplace to attack from three sides. For the British to attemptholding the town under these conditions would have causeda useless sacrifice of troops. Armentieres had no military im-portance, but the Messines-Wyt
