I enclose a photo of a traincrew at Mangaonoho. some 140 miles fromWellington. The engine is class F, cylinders ioj4X 18 inches, six-coupled wheels 36 inchesin diameter, heating surface 485 squarefeet, and weighs ipj/j tons in working or-der. The one represented carries a pres-sure of 160 pounds per square inch. Theseengines are very good steamers and pull bituminous coal, and the patch soon fire-checks from patch bolts to edge of seam, causing leaks. My idea is that the intenseheat of the fire would not come in directcontact with the seam on account of thistube, and the tube would not burn out, aswater would circulate through it. I thinkit is customary to put up castings some-times to protect patch seams, which soonburn out, hence my desire to put in thewater tube as a protection. I will casually say that I have been aconstant reader of your magazine sinceits first issue, and have obtained valuable. .\ NEW ZEAL.^ND LOCOMOTIVE. a good load. I have never had anyexperience in a case of this kind, and, knowing that your readers have had allkinds of experience, I thought perhapsyou could enlighten me on the subject. I propose to put in a 2 or 3-inch tubeextending from front to back sheet of fire-box, close to and in front of a patch seamwhich extends full length of box and aboutiS inches above grate bars.
