St. Mary's Church on an overcast day
The place name Goudhurst is derived from the Old English guo hyrst, means Battle Hill, or the wooded hill on which a battle has been fought. The name commemorates a battle fought on this high ground in Saxon times. in 12c 13c it grew as a farming village. The village high street follows the church wall and has two almost 90-degree bends which make it impossible for many long vehicles to travel through. Garden of England.
