Here, atoms are depicted as spheres and colour-coded: carbon (green), oxygen (red), hydrogen (purple), nitrogen (blue), sulphur (yellow). The atoms are joined by atomic bonds. Penicillin is a drug with anti-bacterial properties. The action of penicillin was discovered by Alexander Fleming in 1928 while working at St. Mary's Hospital in London. He observed that a mold Penicillium notatum prevented the growth of staphylococci bacteria. Since then, many types of penicillins from a range of fungi have been isolated and manufactured for medical use.
