Exterior view of the apse ( eastern facade ) of Lund Domkyrkan ( Cathedral ), Lund, Skåne, Sweden.

The apse, with its three storeys of arcading, completed in 1160, is the oldest and most authentic part of the building. The original Cathedral was consecrated in 1145 by Archbishop Eskil, but a fire destroyed the roof in 1234. The replacement stone vaulting was too heavy for the walls and restoration by Adam van Düren in the 16th century, saw the addition of buttresses and sculpture. It continued to deteriorate until completely renovated in the 19th century by C G Brunius and Helgo Zetterwall in a Romanesque architectural style.
