The lion dragged the body of the lifeless springbok into the shade. NXAI PAN NATIONAL PARK, BOTSWANA: AFTER being caught off guard, this springbok was flipped around like a RAG DOLL by a ravenous lion. In one image, the 350-pound lion used its claws to grab the poor springbok by the head ? flipping the 99-pound prey into the air like a weightless rag doll. In another, the lifeless springbok hung from the lion?s mouth as the lion dragged it into a shadier spot ready to eat. Photographer Renier Jansen Van Rensburg (50) from Gaborone, Botswana, witnessed the action-packed encounter in the country?s Nxai Pan National Park. Renier stood just 246-foot away as a lion caught and devoured a poor springbok in just one minute. Renier captured the images using Sony A9MII and A7RIV cameras, and Sony SEL400 and FE 100-400mm G Master lenses. Springboks are one of the most agile antelope species. They can run at an incredible 54 miles-per-hour ? often outdoing lions who can run at 50 miles-per-hour in short bursts. Unfortunately for this springbok, the lion had a head start.
