Astronomical dome construction. Metal framework of a telescope dome during its construction. When complete, the dome will be mounted on the walls of an observatory to cover a telescope. The wheels at the base of the dome allow it to be rotated, enabling the telescope to be pointed through the viewing aperture at any region of the sky. This photograph dates from the late 19th to the early 20th century, a time when many small private observatories were being built by wealthy amateur astronomers.
