The German physician Franz Joseph Gall, 1758-1828. Gall was interested in the physiology of the brain. He believed that its shape was related to the mental capacity and that different parts of it controlled specific parts of the human body. Gall also believed that the shape of the brain could be deduced by the superficial unevennesses of the skull. This leaded to the development of a new science, called phrenology, in which the human character may be analysed by feeling the bumps of the skull. He was banned from lecturing in Vienna in 1802 because his materialistic philosophy was considered subversive of religion.
