Diabetic man injecting himself with insulin. Diabetes is a condition in which the pancreas fails to produce enough insulin, a hormone required for the metabolism of carbohydrates. Type 1 diabetes is characterised by the complete cessation of insulin production, and injections are needed daily to maintain health. In type 2 diabetes, insulin is still produced but the body fails to react to it. This form can often be controlled by weight loss and diet changes, although later in life regular insulin injections are often required.
