Pont D'Avignon a medieval bridge spanning the Rhone river, Avignon, Provence, France.

Pont St-Benezet (Pont D'Avignon). Medieval bridge spanning the Rhone river. Built between 1171 and 1185, it was originally 900 metres long joining Avignon with Villeneuves-lesAvignon. Only four of the original 22 arches remain today. The bridge's construction was inspired by Saint Benezet- a shepherd boy was (according to tradition) commanded by angels to build a bridge here. The bridge had strategic importance- it was the only fixed bridge between Lyons and the Mediterranean sea.
