Defibrillator machine, used to administer a controlled electric shock to the heart to attempt to restore normal heart rhythm in cases of cardiac arrest due to ventricular fibrillation (the rapid & chaotic beating of the individual muscle fibres of the heart, which precludes the organ from beating regularly). The shock may be given externally (through the electrodes at the ends of the white leads) or directly to the heart during surgery.
